China's drive to reduce nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions will significantly increase demand for AdBlue additive over the next six years

A new report from global research company Integer, entitled "China Diesel Emissions & AdBlue Market Study 2011", predicts that demand for the NOx-reducing diesel additive is set to soar, with consumption growing to between 4.1 and 7.4 million tonnes by 2017.  China currently consumes around 11,000 tonnes against Europe's 1.1 million.

Integer predicts that the exponential growth will be driven by the implementation of the China IV emission and fuel implementation standard.  Although some areas of China, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, are already ahead of schedule for China IV standards, the overall programme has been delayed until at least January 2012.
However, once the new standards come into force, the nation's massive heavy truck sector - which in 2009 pumped out some 2.1m tonnes of NOx emissions - will be transformed through selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and the use of AdBlue.

Yara operates the largest adblue centres

Yara owns and operates one of the world's largest Adblue plants in Sluiskil, Netherlands, to market the Air1 brand across Europe.

Yara is currently one of the largest producers of Adblue in the world.

Its plant will have an annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes of Air1, one of the key ingredients in the urea solution used to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from heavy-duty vehicles in Europe.

AdBlue Contamination


All European truck manufacturers currently offer SCR equipped models, and the future Euro6 emission standard is set to reinforce the demand for this technology. SCR systems are sensitive to potential chemical impurities in the urea solution, therefore, it is essential to maintain high standards of AdBlue quality according to the ISO 22241 standard.
The use of SCR technology in Europe made it necessary to develop an AdBlue supply infrastructure. AdBlue is available from thousands of service stations, this locator finder is updated monthly with new Retail sites selling AdBlue. It can also be purchased in canisters of 5 or 10 litres at service stations. Larger quantities of AdBlue can be delivered in, for example, 208 litres (46 imp gal; 55 US gal) drums, 1,000 litres (220 imp gal; 260 US gal) Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs), and bulk.
