1. What is AdBlue?Adblue is a very pure grade of urea that has to meet the automotive DIN 70070 specification which is being converted to an ISO standard.

2. What is the shelf life of AdBlue?As long as the stipulated storage conditions are observed, AdBlue has a shelf life of 12 months. However, if you still have some AdBlue after 12 months you don't need to dispose of it - you can have it analysed to check is still conforms to the AdBlue specification.

3. What happens if I don't put AdBlue in my vehicle?There will be no change in performance of early vehicles although the vehicle will be operating illegally and enforcement authorities such as VOSA have said they'll treat non-compliance seriously. However, in time vehicle's will be fitted with OBD that will reduce the power of the vehicles if they are run without AdBlue.

4. Will AdBlue be subject to tax or duty?Apart from VAT, no. It is understood there are no plans to introduce any duty.

5. Where can I buy AdBlue?As well as Volvo dealers, AdBlue will become available on some forecourts and truckstops. Bulk and IBC solutions are also easily installed at transport home depots/ yards to compliment existing fuel installations.

6. In what form can I buy AdBlue?AdBlue can be bought in packages of 10 litre canisters and 1000 litre IBC's (Intermediate Bulk Container's) as well as in bulk supplied by road tanker.

7. It is hazardous or dangerous?AdBlue is safe therefore not explosive, flammable or toxic and is not subject to any hazardous products regulations such as ADR. Storage installations do need to be bunded however to protect water courses from potential AdBlue ingress due to perhaps a tank failure. AdBlue doesn't directly pollute but can promote the growth of algae which can in turn take away oxygen for other marine life.

8. Do existing vehicles (such as Euro III) need changing or modifying? No, it only affects new vehicles although in certain cases some buses may have retrofit systems. This is due to their age and certain local air quality initiatives.

9. Is AdBlue; blue?No, it is a clear liquid very similar in appearance to water.

10. What is Air1?Air1 is a unique concept developed by Yara to ensure you a secured supply of the high-quality AdBlue needed in your SCR system. Yara has formed a partnership with Europe's largest distributor, Brenntag, to ensure the supply of AdBlue through the Air1 concept all accross Europe.

11. How much AdBlue will I need?It is expected that the average AdBlue consumption will be about 5% by volume of diesel consumption for Euro IV and about 6% for Euro V.

China's drive to reduce nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions will significantly increase demand for AdBlue additive over the next six years

A new report from global research company Integer, entitled "China Diesel Emissions & AdBlue Market Study 2011", predicts that demand for the NO_x-reducing diesel additive is set to soar, with consumption growing to between 4.1 and 7.4 million tonnes by 2017.  China currently consumes around 11,000 tonnes against Europe's 1.1 million.

Integer predicts that the exponential growth will be driven by the implementation of the China IV emission and fuel implementation standard.  Although some areas of China, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, are already ahead of schedule for China IV standards, the overall programme has been delayed until at least January 2012.

However, once the new standards come into force, the nation's massive heavy truck sector - which in 2009 pumped out some 2.1m tonnes of NOx emissions - will be transformed through selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and the use of AdBlue.

It only takes 5ml of Diesel to 20 litres of AdBlue in the AdBlue tank to turn it into a harmful paste. The first bit of advice is do not attempt to drive off the forecourt and call your breakdown company right away!

Costly Adblue Contamination Error for UK Haulier

During the past few weeks a large northern fleet operator discovered that their new Fleets NOx reduction system had become polluted.

The failed SCR injector had been polluted with oil.

The following investigation identified that the problem was caused by an operator using a non-dedicated container to transfer AdBlue from the IBC to the vehicle.  

The operative admitted to using a non approved-adblue container which had previously been used to top up engine oil and antifreeze and despite receiving a ‘quick rinse’ had led to contamination of the lines. Fortunately, the new magnum was the only truck to have received AdBlue from this container.

To confirm, AdBlue is highly susceptible to contamination and as little as 10ml of oil present in a 100 litre fill can corrupt the system causing irreversible damage.

AdBlue® misfuelling; the facts

To prevent cross contamination we offer the worldwide patented AdBlue® Misfuelling Cap which only allows a 19MM gun entry.  Our solution comes with the AdBlue® magnet inbuilt.

The protection system consists of a ready mounted adapter that has been designed for the different sizes in adblue tanks.  The refilling neck comes in two diameters (58 and 77 mm).
We offer a cap solution for each diameter.

Only the correct AdBlue® refill pistol will fit into the opening - No access for diesel, gas, other pistols or contaminants.

For additional safety, there is a flap on the inside, which closes the opening.  It can be opened by the AdBlue® refill pistol.  The intergrated magnet releases the inserted AdBlue® refill pistol to refill the tank.  The upper part of the lid, fastened on a rubber band, closes the tank.

SCR systems are sensitive to potential chemical impurities in the urea solution, therefore, it is essential to maintain high standards of AdBlue quality according to the ISO 22241 standard.

The use of SCR technology in Europe made it necessary to develop an AdBlue supply infrastructure.
